DR. KATIA ARROYO
“Happiness is not the absence of the problem, it’s the ability to deal with them.”
Hi, I am Dr. Katia Arroyo-Carrion. I am a licensed psychologist trained in working with evidence based treatments developed to address different mental health difficulties and achieve recovery. I always keep in mind that everyone has a difference background, goals, and presenting difficulties. For this reason, I develop a treatment plan with your goals in mind to make sure that I am able to meet your needs. As a proud Spanish native speaker, I am able to provide services in English and Spanish.
My approach to treatment is based on the Cognitive Behavioral approach and Recovery Model. During treatment, in conjunction, we will examine how your thoughts, activities, and interpersonal relationships are affecting your mood, while addressing skills to help you improve your life. Whether it is a difficult romantic relationship or lack thereof, difficulties at work or at home, everything can get better. Together we can work to help you achieve your goals and a better quality of life.
ANXIETY DISORDERS SPECIALIZATION
Are you currently experiencing excessive worrying? Is it difficult for you to control your worrying? Although occasional anxiety is an expected part of life, for some people, the feeling of anxiety never goes away and can become worse over time. On occasions, anxiety can be disabling and not allow you to complete tasks, engage in a relationship, or take care of daily activities. However, there is a misconception that if we avoid anxiety it will go away. For this reason, I teach my clients how to manage their anxiety and that the feelings and discomfort associated to it is part of the human experience. I specialize in providing individual psychotherapy services to clients who are experiencing worry, generalized anxiety disorder, OCD, panic disorders, and social anxiety. Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Exposure and Response Prevention, and Mindfulness Based-Stress Reduction interventions, I provide you with education and concrete skills to assist you with managing your anxiety. By learning stress management techniques people that experience anxiety can be able to calm themselves and decrease the amount of anxiety episodes experienced.
TRAUMA & PTSD SPECIALIZATION
It is natural to feel afraid during and after a traumatic situation that has happened to you or a loved one. A traumatic event is not limited to having been exposed to combat, being an active duty service member or a Veteran; it can be the sudden death of a loved one, sexual assault/abuse, intimate partner violence, car accident, and natural events, among others. Everyone, no matter gender or age, can develop trauma or PTSD. The difference between trauma and PTSD is not the severity of the trauma but the severity and length of symptoms. A clinician that specializes in working with trauma can assist you in evaluating your symptoms and providing adequate treatment. Trauma survivors often experience troubles maintaining and establishing romantic relationships, friendships, and communicating with close family members. Trauma symptoms can also cause problems with trust, closeness, excessive anger, fear, shame, guilt, avoidant behavior, difficulties sleeping, and excessive arousal. Trauma symptoms can become a circular pattern that increase over time without treatment. By using evidence based treatments for PTSD including Prolonged Exposure Therapy and Cognitive Processing Therapy I can assist you with minimizing your symptoms and improving your quality of life.
DEPRESSION & MOOD DISORDERS SPECIALIZATION
Depression is a term that we hear often, but what does it mean? It is a period of sadness, lack of motivation, loss of interest, and anger, among others, that last for two weeks of more. It can feel like carrying the burden of the world on your shoulders. Depression symptoms take many forms and no two persons will experience them exactly alike. Sometimes depression can start after having experienced a loss, divorce, retirement, break-up, transition to middle age, and other events, or it can hit you like a brick out of nowhere. Depression doesn’t discriminate who it affects and can be experienced by any gender, race, relationship status, education, and career. Depression can also vary in level of intensity and its treatment will depend in diverse factors that we will address during the session. I am clinically trained in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to assist you with improving your symptoms of depression. Also, we will work on learning skills to improve assertive communication, concrete coping skills to address symptoms of depression, and healthy boundaries that will allow you to continue making improvements in all areas of your life.
